Berkswell Windmill

The Berkswell Windmill was built in 1826 on the site of a postmill. It is the most complete Tower Mill in the West Midlands. The mill is a time warp from its last days of working in 1948.

Situated in Windmill Lane at Balsall Common, Berkswell Windmill is run by volunteers who offer full guided tours from May-October. Although there is modest entrance fee the proceeds are used to help towards the upkeep of the mill.

The mill was wind driven right up until 1927 and by a diesel engine until 1948. It produced flour and later animal feed. All the internal machinery can be seen inside.

Locally the windmill is referred to as Balsall Windmill. In 1971 the windmill was restored by George Field and later by Paul and Jeanette McGarry in 2004 who established the Friends of Berkswell Windmill Group to help run it and raise funds for its upkeep.

The windmill is open by appointment and on some Bank Holidays.
