Bodenham Arboretum is situated near Wolverley, Kidderminster. This arboretum is privately owned and was set up in 1973 by the current owners who dammed up the streams crossing their farmland to make a series of lakes and pools. By planting trees and shrubs from all over the world the arboretum was created.
The arboretum has around 3000 species of trees and shrubs. It is home to wildfowl and landscaped within three sloped valleys. A walk around the arboretum takes you through changing scenery varying from lakes and ponds to views across woodland and open fields. This is a great place to go for a walk or take the family out for the day.
Clent hills can be viewed across the landscape in the distance and
there are several miles of paths for the serious hikers. Most people
tend to stroll around the immediate grounds. Considering this is a
private establishment without the funding of a large organisation such
as the National Trust the family have done well in its layout and
upkeep. This is very much a working farm and visitors will be concious
of this as they walk around the various outbuildings.
From the brochure and leaflet photographs it becomes obvious that the
best time to visit the arboretum is in the spring when the daffodils,
bluebells and foxgloves are in bloom. Walking around in
January/February time visitors should take care to avoid
trampling on new shoots ( very early this year ) and causing
damage.
Facilities on site include a well laid out visitor centre with a small
shop, information services and a restaurant right by the lake. An
annual membership scheme operates for those that would like to return
throughout the changing seasons.
